How to Stop Aluminium Window Leaks Before the Chennai Monsoon
By Supreme Aluminium & Hardwares, Selaiyur · Updated
Quick answer: Most aluminium window leaks come from three places: cracked sealant between the frame and the wall, hardened or missing glazing rubbers, and blocked drain holes in the bottom track. Before the monsoon, clean the drain holes, replace worn rubbers, and re-seal the outside joint between the frame and the wall with a good sealant.
Why windows leak
- Frame-to-wall joint: the sealant cracks with heat and age, and rain runs in around the frame.
- Glazing rubbers: U and D rubbers harden and shrink, leaving gaps around the glass.
- Blocked drain holes: the bottom track has small drain slots; when dust blocks them, water overflows into the room.
- Loose or missing interlocks and brushes between shutters.
Fix it in five steps
- Clean the bottom track and clear the drain holes with a wire or thin screwdriver.
- Check the rubbers — if hard or cracked, replace them with matching rubber profiles.
- Scrape out old, cracked sealant from the outside frame-to-wall joint.
- Clean and dry the joint completely.
- Apply fresh sealant — heavy sealant for the wall joint, silicone for glass-to-frame joints. See our sealants.
Tip: Always seal from the outside. Sealing only from inside traps water within the wall.
When to call a fabricator
If the frame is bent, the wheels are broken or the shutters do not close fully, the window needs repair or replacement. Send a photo on WhatsApp and we will suggest the parts or a fabricator near you.
